Salt Lake City police outside of East High School

December 5th, 2024, after a report of an active shooter Salt Lake City police quickly responded to East High School. It was soon found to be a false report, police said.

Yaier Javaid with Salt Lake City police say the call was received at 11:05 a.m. The school went on lockdown and police responded, “in minutes, if not seconds,” he said. Officers were quickly able to see there were no injuries or weapons found on campus.

A second investigation found that a parent had called 911 after receiving a call from their child about having a gun pointed at them off-campus.

When the call was made, there was a student resource officer at the scene who was able to confirm there was no shooting at the school prior to the report.

Earlier this year, Utah lawmakers approved a bill that imposed harsh penalties on students and adults who make threats against schools or falsely report emergencies. Any adult convicted of making school threats can now be charged with a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

Any students responsible for threats will face being suspended or expelled from school.

Students and parents now think the school needs more security and to bring back weapon detectors after Salt Lake City School District officials agreed they will not be paying for the staff required for campuses to operate their weapon detectors in the 2024-2025 school year.

News channels have made articles and a video news release on the incident such as KSL and ABC 4
