From Classroom to the College Field

By Addison Feldman, September 24th 2024

At East High School, our hallways are filled with student-athletes. Each athlete with a unique story, but each one aims for the same goal, transitioning from the anticipation of their dreams to the reality of their achievements. Digging deeper, we discovered the challenges, triumphs, and everything in between of our former classmates.

Balancing the demands of school and sport in high school is not easy, though it is a crucial endeavor to reach the next level of athletics and academics. Most East High student-athletes shared the importance of early preparation and maintaining good grades.

John Amone, captain of East High’s Football team, discussed the challenge of balancing his academics and his sport." Being a student before an athlete is pretty hard, I have to try and balance both,” comments Amone. He strives for his success on and off the field. Amone knows it may be challenging but, in the end, he knows his journey will be immensely rewarding.

They also discussed the importance of mental health, student-athletes noted how paramount it is to their success on and off the fields. Athletes at East expressed the significance of nurturing our mental wellbeing. Varsity women's soccer player, Elsie Miller said, “in order to be the best in our game we have to be in a good head space.” As athletes nurture their mental well-being it will guide them to be more successful and prepare athletes for challenges they may encounter throughout their personal journeys.

To wrap it up, we asked two former East High Women’s Soccer players to share any words of encouragement they have for East High student-athletes trying to reach the next level.

Rhea Pearson: “Everybody has a different path, don’t get down on yourself, you will find your home.”

Mia Feldman: “Strive to commit to a school that represents your values on and off the field. Prioritize your academic success and the rest will come with it. Navigating the recruiting path can be daunting, but if you stay true to your own path you will find a home.”
