College readiness, scholarships and writing an essay for college.

By Keiran Castillo, November 11th 2024

On November 13th and 14th Grace and Yanderi posted that Utah University and Utah State University will be coming to talk about they’re campus, financial aid, housing and filling out applications. They’ll be coming from 9-10am and will either be in room 2127 or in the computer lab. Sign up on canvas or talk to Grace at the counseling center to be a part of their visit!

Scholarships

Don’t forget Seniors and early graduates we do have a canvas page called college advising & Scholarships, Grace will help you out with college advising and Yanderi will help you find scholarships. Remember you don’t need a 4.0 GPA to get a scholarship still apply for them, they’re help you a lot, FAFSA is also now open, and according to Stududentaid.gov FAFSA forms deadline is June 30th, 2025, and “there is no income limit”.  Having good academics does help with scholarships, so if you got a good ACT score send it! Even if the college of your choice doesn’t require it.

Essays

Spend time writing your college essay this gives you a chance to show who you are beyond the grades and academics. Even though a lot of colleges don’t require an essay anymore it’s a good way to be able to get more scholarships and give you a boost in your college application.

You can talk about what you're passionate about, your struggles, family and so many more things. Every month Yanderi will post scholarships you can apply to, and you can submit these essays to help them get to know you better.

When writing an Essay remember these 7 rules to make your essay stand out:

  • Be authentic (right something that matters to you)

  • Tell a story(don’t list achievements, tell a compelling story)

  • Focus on a theme (stick to your theme)

  • Show don’t tell (use descriptive language instead of just stating)

  • Be concise (stick to word limit and make every wors count)

  • Edit and proofread

  • Reflect on your experience.
