How Spirit Bowl Comes To Be
By Julie Lin, February 20th 2025
March approaches with several events but one event particularly stands out on the calendar, Spirit Bowl. Specifically on March 28, 2025 – settling which grade will be the true winner of the year with the rest of the week full of fun activities and the opportunity to dress up!
Preparing for Spirit Bowl
During Spirit week, many students come face to face with decorations on each floor as they enter the school doors as well as dress up days and activities all based around the central theme this year, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet, how does this come to be?
I specifically asked East High’s student gov advisor, Lynette Yorgason, on how she plans and sets up such a cultivating event every year!
“As an adviser I have to plan out the timeline of when to start planning everything, and I start that process in January. I figure out when to pick the theme, announce the theme, when to figure out decorations, games, and activities. Then I bring that plan to the SBO’s and SE’s, and they take charge of it and get senate and Gov to pick ideas, vote on them, and then plan out the best ones. Then while the students follow that plan, I work on a lot of behind-the-scenes tasks to make sure everything runs smoothly like getting the teachers involved, finding referees, figuring out how to fix issues we had last year, etc.”
Ms. Yorgason does an amazing job placing the foundational steps for all of student council to follow and this will affect the members of student council in different ways, especially their schedules before and during spirit week.
Thus why we also interviewed Sorayah Honarvar, a sophomore student gov member to briefly describe how to is for them to enhance the school atmosphere for spirit week.
“The decorating process is hectic, there’s a lot of effort put in and it requires a lot of our time. We stay till 10 pm for about a week decorating the school and setting everything up, during the day of spirit bowl we always arrive early, and it costs us class time.”
Student Gov and senate does an amazing job considering the amount of effort put into setting everything up for everyone to have a fun and exciting week.
Culture in Spirit Bowl
Spirit Bowl has been around for quite some time and it’s apparent in many different schools. It’s the opportunity for all grades to interact and essentially unite us all together. Since the event is close to testing season, our school’s atmosphere has been stressful for both students and staff. Having an event like Spirit Bowl allows teachers to be silly and have fun in front of students and for students to be excited about a school activity.
Overall, Spirit Bowl is a fun and exciting activity that everyone can participate in which is why so much effort was put in so don’t forget to make sure that you have a lot of fun when Spirit Week is here!
