All About Spirit week
Spirit week is the week every High School student can’t wait for during the school year. This week is a tradition at every high school. The week where we get to dress up in costumes and not get judged. Spirit week contains different things like: Dress up days, Games during lunch, And my personal favorite Spirit Bowl. Spirit Bowl is the assembly at the end of Spirit Week. This is when all the students in the school go against each other. This is a way for the students to get together and have fun as a community. Students from all grades can have fun during this event. Not only is Spirit week fun, it's also very competitive. While seniors are trying to win for their last year as a highschool student. The others' grades are trying to prove they are better than them. Freshmans are trying to prove they aren’t just the babies of the school. Sophomores are trying to prove that they are better than other grades. Juniors are trying to prove that they really own the school. Seniors are trying to prove that they really are the better ones.
High School Student POV Of Spirit Week
Spirit week is personally one of my favorite weeks because not only do I get to dress up I also do fun activities. My favorite spirit week dress up day is Decades day. This is because there are different decades you can choose from. My favorite one to do is the 90s. This decade has a lot of different styles you can do. During lunch there are different activities each day. My favorites are the egg race, Guess the song/artist, and most of all musical chairs. Watching people play these games or even playing them yourself is so much fun. With the competitiveness with grades you want to win those spirit points for them. Participating in these activities will get you competitively ready for the spirit bowl. Spirit bowl is my favorite day of the school year. Watching your grade compete and win games in the spirit bowl is the best feeling as a high school student.
Spirit bowl
Spirit bowl is the assembly at the end of spirit week. This is the day where you dress up the color your grade is given and compete against the other grades. At East the seniors are given the color red each year due to it being the main east color. During spirit bowl there are different games you can sign up for the week before.
Last year the freshman was neck and neck with the seniors but the seniors came on top. The scores were Juniors at 4th with 6380, Sophomores at 3rd with 6690, Freshmen at 2nd with 9380, and Seniors at 1st with 9570. During spirit bowl your class gets multiple chances to gain more points for your grade. These games can include: a basketball game between grades, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Don’t Drop The Broom, Get Something From The Crowd, and more.
Interview With Ms Yorgason
I talked to Ms. Yorgason, the teacher, before Spirit Week, and here’s what she shared.
First, I asked her what makes Spirit Week so exciting for East High School. She explained, “What makes Spirit Week thrilling is that everyone feels included, and it helps them connect with the school. Plus, it’s exciting because everyone loves to win, and it’s fun to see your grade beat the others!” Then, I wanted to know what she enjoys most about Spirit Week. She said, “The best part for me is seeing students feel like they belong at East High. The excitement and involvement create an amazing sense of unity.”
I also asked how many people help organize Spirit Week. She replied, “Spirit Week is put together by our Amazing Student Council, which has about 80 students in Student Government and Student Senate.” She mentioned that the Student Council spends at least 30 hours decorating the week before Spirit Week and then another 15-20 hours during the week for activities, decorating, and practicing for the Spirit Bowl.
When I asked her how much time they spend preparing for Spirit Week, she shared, “The Student Council decides on the themes and dress-up days by gathering ideas from other students, discussing them, and then voting together. We’re currently working on our Spirit Week theme, and we’ll announce it on The Leap in February!” Lastly, I asked about how they choose the games for the Spirit Bowl. She explained, “The games are organized by the different grades in our Student Council. Each grade runs a couple of games, so we usually have at least eight games during the Spirit Bowl, and sometimes the SBOs and Senate get involved too.”
What do you think makes spirit week so fun?
