BYU's Cinderella Season Continues Despite Underdog Status
By Misi Mapa, November 3rd 2024
The BYU Cougars have defied expectations once again, improving to 8-0 with a convincing 37-25 victory over UCF in Orlando. Despite their undefeated record, the Cougars entered the game against UCF as underdogs, a recurring theme throughout their remarkable 2024 campaign. This win marks the fourth time, just this season, that BYU has overcome underdog status and came out victorious, joining an elite group as only the second team since 1990 to start 8-0 while being underdogs in four games.
The Cougars' success has been fueled by their ability to use skepticism as motivation. Team captains have consistently referenced betting lines in pregame speeches, rallying the squad to prove doubters wrong. This underdog mentality has propelled BYU to impressive wins against SMU, Kansas State, Baylor, and now UCF, all while facing unfavorable odds.
While oddsmakers and national media continue to underestimate BYU, the team's performance on the field speaks volumes. With a potent offense led by a healthy LJ Martin and a stout defense that has shown resilience despite late-game breakdowns, the Cougars are proving they belong among college football's elite. As College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard aptly put it, "The disrespect of the Cougars, you guys got to stop it." It is time for the nation to take notice of BYU's historic run and give credit where it is due.
Next Up, BYU faces their biggest rival, Utah. The Utes are coming off a 4-game losing streak, but this game means a lot to both teams. I will expect a hard-fought game from both sides, and I also think this game will be a true test of how far the Cougars have come.
