The Holy War

By Zion Ligi, November 4th 2024

Another name for the annual football game between the University of Utah Utes and BYU Cougars is the "Holy War." This is one of the most exciting rivalries in college football, scheduled this year on November 9, 2024. The fans are starving for yet another thrilling match between these two teams from Utah.

This rivalry started back in 1896, which would make it over 125 years old. The Utes and Cougars have faced each other 101 times, with Utah winning more games overall. Utah leads the series 62-35-4, but the different records kept by each school add to the excitement and debate among fans.

The name "Holy War" refers to the fact that BYU is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while Utah is a public university. But this is more than a religious rivalry-it pits family against family and friend against friend across the state. Both teams have had their moments of success: Utah was strong early, while BYU had a good streak in the latter part of the 20th century. Recently, Utah has gone on a tear, having won nine in a row from 2010 to 2019.

This rivalry can be considered fierce for the simple reason of the fans' passion. Tales have been told time and time again of the fierce arguments and fights that have occurred among its supporters. Being as competitive as it is, the Holy War is a tradition treasured in Utah since it speaks much about college football and how the fans adore their teams.

With the approach of the 2024 game, that will leave both determined to see themselves at the top and claiming bragging rights. Whoever may win, the Utah vs. BYU game will only add one more exciting chapter to this historic rivalry.
