SLC School District Bond Proposal
By Marcelino Acosta, November 9th 2024
The Salt Lake City school board of education called for a meeting this November to ask for $730 million dollars. They called this meeting to get funds to rebuild 2 high schools Highland and West and to give East an athletic field house.
West High School is the oldest high school in Utah, being built in 1921. Highland was built in 1955 and has the same issues as West like Outdated plumbing and Electrical systems, bad heating and older power outlets making it harder for them to expand to modern day technology.
More problems that West and Highland share are classroom sizes being too small and a bad layout for the schools, they have multiple entrance exits giving them security risks. Both schools will receive solar panels to give the schools energy. West and Highland construction will take about 5 years to get all the upgrades.
The school board has given 3 options for Highland to improve their school. For Highland their first option is to improve their parking lot and give them 40 more spots. Option 2 is to relocate 18 classrooms and rebuild somewhere else in the school. Option 3 is to move their Band, Choir, CTE, Fine arts and photography classes somewhere else, losing 40 parking spots, giving them athletic facilities and a driving range for the school.
Now for East the school will be getting a field house for training and practice for the students for any type of weather. The fieldhouse will have locker rooms, and a place to store equipment for sports. The fieldhouse will also be able to be used for meetings and PE classes and school activities.
